Kevin Brooks

Kevin Brooks studeerde psychologie en filosofie in Birmingham, maar stopte voortijdig met beide studies. Hij had verschillende banen, en was vooral werkzaam als musicus en beeldend kunstenaar. Hij gaf zijn werk op om fulltime te kunnen schrijven.

Brooks schrijft gedichten, verhalen, romans en liedteksten, zowel voor kinderen als voor volwassenen. In 2002 won hij de Canongate Prize for New Writing voor een kort verhaal. De poging van Kevin Brooks om een uitgever te vinden voor zijn kinderboek Martyn Pig toont overeenkomsten met die van Harry-Potterauteur J.K. Rowling. Net als Rowling stuurde Brooks zijn manuscript naar een groot aantal uitgeverijen en werd het overal afgewezen. Ten slotte stuurde hij zijn werk - in een laatste poging - naar de Engelse uitgeverij The Chicken House.

Uitgever Barry Cunningham, die ooit voor uitgeverij Bloomsbury Harry Potter ontdekte, las het manuscript en was direct enthousiast. Hij kocht het boek, samen met twee andere romans van Kevin Brooks. Martyn Pig is inmiddels ook in de Verenigde Staten en Frankrijk verschenen en verscheen in vertaling als Martyn Big bij De Harmonie. Verder verschenen in Nederland Lucas, Candy, Het Dodenpad, Aanwezig, Bedreigd, Zwartkonijn, Dood aan God en iBoy.

Martyn Pig werd in juni 2003 onderscheiden met de Engelse Branford Boase Award. Daarnaast stond het boek op de shortlist van de CILIP Carnegie Medal. Kevin Brooks woont samen met zijn gezin, 4 honden, 6 schapen, 8 kippen en 2 konijnen in North Yorkshire.
