Zeer goed boek en meeslepend vertelling van het feminisme in China. Fincher focust op het persoonlijke, maar verliest het grotere verhaal nooit uit het hoofd met gepaste verwijzingen naar haar vorig boek en onderzoek (Leftover women) en ontwikkelingen in het juridisch - politieke veld.

Het meest uitdagende van haar is haar argument dat ze het voortbestaan van autoritaire regimes koppelt aan vrouwen-haat en -onderdrukking. Dit is een prachtige onderzoeksvraag voor menig academische onderzoekers. In dat geval is er nog veel werk.
