Leest als een thriller. Geschiedkundig onderbouwd. Je krijgt er niet enkel een beeld van Pot en de rode Khmer van, maar ook van Cambodja in het geheel. Een must voor ieder met een interesse in de geschiedenis van de 20e eeuw. Aanrader!

LS! Meesterlijk geschreven boek. Het leest wat moeilijk bijvoorbeeld door alle Cambodjaanse namen, maar een makkelijk leesbaar boek over deze genocide zou oneerbiedig zijn. Het boek gaat niet zozeer over Pol Pot, dat komt doordat uitgevers vaak titels bedenken, maar meer over de moderne geschiedenis van Cambodja. De schrijver weet de wrede anekdotes te doseren, zodat je maag nog heel is na anderhalf miljoen slachtoffers. Een uiteindelijk antwoord waarom de genocide plaatsvond blijft Philip Short ons schuldig.
