Samenvatting

Red Sorghum is a novel of family, myth, and memory, set during the fratricidal barbarity of the 1930s, when the Chinese battled both Japanese invaders and each other. [It is] narrated by a young man at the end of the cultural revolution who tells the stories of his father, Douguan; his granddad, the most ruthless and infamous bandit and guerrilla commander in the region; and his grandma who fell in love with the commander when he raped her in the sorghum fields, only three days after her arranged marriage.

"Red sorghum" is not your typical novel, in no one way. It is not linear, nor uses flashback the way we are used to read in Western literature. There is no such thing as "magic realism" as per Southamerican tradition, not at all. It can appear gorish to the excess, and reading it can be grueling. The prose is different, as it comes from a complete different writing paradigma, the Chinese one. No climax as we mean it, no "plot" as we mean it, the structure of the Chinese novel is completely different, more on the collection of episodes than a flow of connected events.

But it is an amazing portrait of lives, of loves, of revenge and the cold necessity of it. It has pages of unforgettable literature, as Mo Yan is second to none in the use of the pen. God only knows what we are loosing in the translation!

The stories (because truly is a collage of "stories" with a common, geographic and sentimental fil rouge are about the lives of a few chinese families during the two wars which raged China in the last century: the sino-japanese and the nationalist vs communist civil war. Peasants, meaning 90% of the Chinese population at the time, in the middle, as cannon fodder but also as heros, as unbelievable monument to human resilience and wish to live, to survive and to enjoy.

    A piece of true literature.
