This 6th and final part of the trilogy "Hook, Line and Sinker" concludes Len Deighton (LD)'s second series about spy couple-with-children Bernard and Fiona Samson. Key facts are withheld in this review about what went on before. All of LDs 3 trilogies and 9 books can be read as stand-alone spy fictions. But reading them in sequence does add value.
Much of "Spy Sinker" 's first half is a 'prequel' going back to 1977, when plans were first made to place an agent inside the Kremlin or its next best alternative. Doing this takes many years of careful preparation, with only two or three very senior people fully in the know. LD used the prequel-format also for some reverse engineering, adding new dimensions, secrets even to the series' main protagonists and their character. Fiona and Bret Rensselaer are highlighted in particular, but LD also makes clever, brief and new allusions to minor events and -actors in his previous books.

Then the novel skips six (6) years, moves to 1983. Another opportunity for LD for reverse engineering and bringing in new characters. This reviewer found one secret about Fiona regretful and poorly described, but female readers may find the episode superb. Lots of psychology in the 1983 part too. And LD may use Fiona's secret later to great effect in his final trilogy...
This review leaves the outcome of this book and trilogy in 1987 wide open. Readers of the 5th volume will be anxious to know how Bernard and Fiona cope with the dramatic, bloody outcome of that book. Sorry. The back cover lauds this novel as LDs best of the series. This reader found LDs musings about Fiona mindset unconvincing and boring, therefore no full marks.
