Douglas Coupland

Douglas Coupland is geboren op een NAVO-basis in Duitsland in 1961. Hij is de auteur van de internationale bestseller JPod en tien andere romans, waaronder De kauwgumballendief, Hé Nostradamus, Vriendin in coma en Generatie X. Zijn boeken zijn verschenen in 35 talen. Hij is naast schrijver kunstenaar en beeldhouwer, meubelontwerper en scenarioschrijver. Hij woont en werkt in Vancouver. Samenvatting

Andy, Dag and Claire have been handed a society beyond their means. Twentysomethings, brought up with divorce, Watergate and Three Mile Island, and scarred by the 80s fallout of yuppies, recession, crack and Ronald Reagan, they represent the new generation- Generation X.
Fiercely suspicious of being lumped together as an advertiser's target market, they have quit dreary careers and cut themselves adrift in the California desert. Unsure of their futures, they immerse themselves in a regime of heavy drinking and working in no future McJobs in the service industry.
Underemployed, overeducated and intensely private and unpredicatable, they have nowhere to direct their anger, no one to assuage their fears, and no culture to replace their anomie. So they tell stories: disturbingly funny tales that reveal their barricaded inner world. A world populated with dead TV shows, 'Elvis moments' and semi-disposible Swedish furniture.

    Geschreven bij Generation X

    Hate it as he might, Douglas Coupland truly became the voice of a generation with this book. Generation X follows a group of friends leading seemingly aimless lives with their McJobs and storytelling. While reading this book you might at first get the sense that the book is actually about nothing but you end up with a sense of how this generation views the world: they are well-educated, want to be individuals, have no real culture of their own and no real sense of future either. Although it might at first glance seem like a pretty bleak and depressing book with these frustrated people, but they are also really interesting, creative and funny so you end up with a sense of hope.
