His most famous works are Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and A Child's Garden of Verses. His works have been admired by many other writers, including Jorge Luis Borges, Bertolt Brecht, Marcel Proust, Arthur Conan Doyle, Henry James, Cesare Pavese, Emilio Salgari, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, Vladimir Nabokov, J. M. Barrie, and G. K. Chesterton, who said that Stevenson ""seemed to pick the right word up on the point of his pen, like a man playing spillikins"".

Samenvatting

Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Olalla' is a compelling Gothic novella that explores themes of family, inheritance, and the duality of human nature. Set in an isolated mansion in Spain, the story follows a young soldier who becomes entangled in the dark secrets of the mysterious De Rementeria family. Stevenson's evocative prose and atmospheric descriptions create a sense of foreboding that permeates the narrative, drawing readers into a world of hidden desires and repressed emotions. The novella's exploration of the supernatural and psychological make it a captivating read for fans of Gothic fiction. Stevenson's writing style is characterized by a keen attention to detail and a mastery of suspense, keeping readers on edge until the chilling conclusion. Known for his adventurous spirit and keen insight into human behavior, Stevenson brings a depth of complexity to 'Olalla' that resonates with readers long after the final page. I highly recommend 'Olalla' to anyone interested in delving into the darker aspects of the human psyche, as Stevenson weaves a spellbinding tale that will leave you questioning the nature of good and evil.
